Barnes Grocery

This shell of a building was used, perhaps for most of its existence, as a grocery store. Two different grocery stores operated there: first, Fancy Grocery, according to ads in Friscola yearbooks, was in business there from the mid-1940s to the late 1950s.

Barnes' Grocery and Market moved into the building in the late 1950s and maintained business there until at least the mid-1970s.

Tim Taylor, who bagged groceries at Barnes' Grocery as a youth, describes the store's layout below.*

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the by-then roofless building was used as a courtyard by the owners of Burney's Buds and Bloomers, a flower shop in an adjacent building. The mural on the left wall in the 2010 pictures was painted during that time.

Cannot get the video to open. Was this store also refered to as the Yellow Front Store at one time. My dad, Alto Smith, worked there during high school.

@Trish, thanks! I ran into your brother at the bank this past Christmas Eve, and he seemed to remember quite a bit about "old Frisco City"! I hope I can talk with him again, maybe for an addition to the site? It seems like lots of local kids worked at the grocery stores (and other places) downtown.

@Troy, I'm sorry about the video. Can you open any others on the site? If this one continues to be a problem, I can look up the host link for it and send it to you if you're still interested in seeing it.
Also, I'm (hopefully) attaching a link to a 1956 FCHS yearbook photo (sorry for the poor image quality) of downtown that places the Yellow Front Store in the Liles building, up by People's Bank. That's the only location I've found it.

I think prior to being Barnes Grocery, this page's building may have housed the REA (Southern Pine). When I get back to do some more research this summer, the first thing I'll do is look at tax records to see exactly what businesses were where, and when. Daunting task, but thanks for your interest in the site, and for the info about your dad. I'll continue updating the site, so keep visiting!

Mary,

I finally got them to work, Thanks! I found a picture of the old Yellow Front Store while looking at the Western Auto pictures. It was right next door and between the Western Auto and Roy Hardware.

Mary,
Can you tell me anything about a diner/restaurant that my grandfather, Howard Wiggins, used to own/operate. It was near the stockyards.

I remember Mom would send me to Barnes Grocery. I always came in through the back door. Mr. Barnes never did mind. I recall this was storage and a butcher area for the meats. His daughter, Madalyn, was a classmate of mine. Speaking of the Yellow Front Store, I recall my Dad saying that he had also worked there during high school. I worked my senior year at People's Drug Store for the Palmer's. I recall seeing all the old prescriptions on the shelf. The drug store still had some of Mr. Albritton's old apothecary's and medication that had to be formulated and mixed. My uncle, Palmer Wiggins, lived in Dr. Week's old office for many years. I remember seeing the hole in the floor above the Drug store where the dental chair was placed. Don't forget that O. O. McGinnis law office was at the top of the stairs as well. One last comment, I remember the second floor of that same building was where Frisco would store the Christmas decorations. So many old memories of when downtown was a business hub of the county. I graduated from FCHS in 1981. It is sad to see the old town deteriorating today. Rance Wiggins

I am doing a project for a museum class I am taking and came across this site. It has brought back so many memories and taught me a lot about my hometown thank you for all your hard work. I remember going to Barnes Supermarket with my mother's aunt when I was growing up. It sad to see the town so deserted, I graduated from Frisco High in 1983.
